A Tailormade Screw for a Drone

Our customer EHang needed a fastening element that combined a variety of requirements for their drone: it had to be lightweight, vibration-resistant, secure as well as easy to maintain.

EHang drone is a modern white and black quadcopter with two propellers, designed for efficient flight and maneuverability.

The Mission: Overcoming the Limits of the Sky

Allowing people to fly as free as birds – that is the vision of EHang Intelligent Technology Co. Ltd. To make this dream a reality, the Chinese company develops drones that can be specifically used for unmanned passenger transport.

Drones are professionally used in many areas. The intelligent flying objects do valuable work in the field of public interest, such as security, environmental monitoring, transport safety or detailed cartography. EHang is one of the market leaders in the development and manufacture of drones.

An Ambitious Goal: Transporting People with Drones

EHang is pursuing the goal of transporting people with drones in the near future and using unmanned flights to rescue people from dangerous situations. Such exceptional application areas place high demands on the fastening technology inside the product. Fasteners on drones need to be lightweight, may not come loose due to vibrations or other environmental influences, and have to be produced and assembled efficiently.

A Tailormade Fastener for Special Requirements

To meet these demanding needs, the Bossard engineering team in China supports EHang with the development of a tailormade fastener for the camera mount of the Falcon-B drone. Since the camera unit needs to be securely held in place during use and at the same time be easy to remove for maintenance work, the assembly and disassembly capability was a special focus during development. In addition, EHang desired a simplification of the design.

Smooth Realization of the Project

Bossard presented an initial design for the customized part after just one week. Two weeks later, the first samples were produced. Together with the customer, we analyzed and optimized the assembly and installation process, and, after three additional months of testing, the new fastener was accepted together with the technical drawings and test reports and was released for production.

A Tailor-Made Market Novelty

The new special screw for the camera mount of the Falcon-B can be attached without tools. The help guide included ensures that the screw cannot twist and cannot be screwed in too low. In addition, a roughened surface and a snap closure ensure a precise and secure connection. The screw cannot be lost, even if it loosens.

For maintenance work, the connection can be easily loosened and re-tightened with a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. The result is a significantly reduced assembly time with maximum reliability. What is more, the newly developed connection solution can also be used for other EHang product lines.
