Functional coatings are a great option to add additional locking, securing, holding, or sealing functions to fastening elements. Find out which one is right for you.
Functional coatings are system solutions for fastening elements that are exposed to mechanical stress, such as screws and nuts. They consist of different polymer composites, for example polyamide, plastisol, or polyolefin. Depending on the coating, they provide a locking, securing (captive), holding, or sealing function.
There is a suitable functional coating for every application, whether it is for securing against vibrations, for securing against fastener loss, for sealing in the thread, for sealing under the head and much more.
The Advantages of Functional Coatings
Integrated Safety
The securing functionality is integrated directly into the fastener
High Security
Functional coatings provide a strong and reliable securing function for fasteners
Economical Option
Functional coatings are a lower cost securing option, as no additional parts are needed
Loss Prevention
Added functionalities prevent fasteners from being lost
Captive Component
The coatings are captive parts of the connection, which cannot be lost or forgotten
Jamming Coatings
For our jamming coatings, parts of the threads are given a coating of highly-elastic, abrasion-resistant polyamide. This fills in any axial play between the screw and the internal thread and thus creates a dense, vibration-resistant connection. We offer thread-locking and thread-sealing options:
Sealing coatings provide a protective barrier that prevents contaminants like dust, moisture or chemicals from entering the fastening joint. Thus, they enhance the longevity of fasteners by offering corrosion resistance and wear protection. Some options include:
Precote® 5 : Nonreactive, film-forming dispersion with solid mineral lubricants for immediate sealing of cylindrical and conical threads. Suitable for all threaded materials. Prevents corrosion.
Nyseal® under-head coating: Plastic coating which eliminates the need for additional washers, seals, or O-rings. Excellent sealing properties against fluids and gases. Protects sensitive surfaces from damage.
Nyplas® under-head coating: Similar to Nyseal® under-head coatings, but can achieve thicker coatings. Very good sealing properties. Long service life with no shrinkage or desiccation.
TufLok® and Nytemp® Patch all-round: Coatings of highly-elastic, abrasion-resistant polyamide. Securing function for nearly all materials. Can be stressed immediately after the application and reused several times. They are resistant to alcohol, oil, fuel and most thinners and can be stored for an unlimited period of time. Furthermore they work in temperatures ranging from –50 °C to 120 °C (TufLok®) or -50 °C to 200 °C (Nytemp®).
Adhesive Coatings
Adhesive coatings are the most secure preliminary coatings for threaded parts with higher safety requirements. These coatings consist of the smallest microcapsules. These microcapsules are destroyed in the installation process by pressure and shear loads – curing then starts immediately. Adhesive coatings are a reliable safeguard against loosening and are suitable for virtually all surfaces and materials. The options we offer include:
Precote® 30/80/85: a varnish-like pre-coating system based on microencapsulated acrylates for the locking and sealing of threaded parts. The adhesive function becomes effective only on assembly.
Loss Protection Coatings
These functional coatings keep the fastening elements in their place during transport or assembly. They can thus help reduce assembly times for the end user and prevent installation errors. An example is Nystay®:
Nystay® fixing coating: Nystay® is a plastic precoating (polyolefin-based) which helps to keep fasteners in place in their respective application or assembly group. It is non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and can be applied to a diverse range of fastening elements such as screws, shafts, rivets, studs, or pressed and turned parts.
