Nord-Lock® wedge-locking technology secures bolted joints against unintended loosening – even in case of extreme vibrations and dynamic loads.
How Do Nord-Lock® Washers Work?
Nord-Lock® invented the wedge-locking technology: The wedge-shaped lock washers have wedge surfaces on the inside and radial ribs on the outside. The shape of the wedge is designed in a way that the angle of the wedge surface is always greater than the thread angle. When the screw or nut is being tightened, the radial ribs of the washers embed themselves in a locking fashion into the mating surface.
The paired washers are firmly embedded in their position and movement is only possible between the wedge surfaces. Even the smallest turn of the screw causes an increase in the pre-load force due to the wedge effect – the screw locks itself.

Nord-Lock® X-Series Washers
Nord-Lock® X-Series washers are the optimal choice when you are facing extreme challenges that require extra layers of protection. These washers combine Nord-Lock® wedge-locking technology with an additional spring effect.
The wedge effect prevents bolt loosening caused by vibration and dynamic loads. The spring effect (Fs) counteracts the slackening movement of the bolt, preventing loss of preload in the joint.
Applications
Nord-Lock® X-Series washers keep bolted joints secure even in difficult applications like:
- Material expansion and contraction during thermal cycling
- Settlement due to paint or powder-coating
- Intense vibrations on soft metals, composites, and polymers
- Slackening due to multiple clamped parts
- Joints with short clamp length
- Loss of clamp load in gasketed joints

Installation and Performance of Nord-Lock® Washers
The pre-assembled washers are installed in pairs; wedge ramps need to face wedge ramps. The bolted joint must be tightened with a standard tool according to the torque guidelines.
The Junker vibration test complying to DIN 65151, showcases the superior performance of the Nord-Lock® wedge lock washers in maintaining clamp load.
