Coating Thickness Measurement
Expert Test Services
Coatings protect your components from the environment. To maintain this protection, coatings must have the appropriate thickness. Regular coating thickness analysis in a technical testing laboratory is advisable.
Coating Thickness Measurement
Which coating you choose for your components depends on various factors, e.g: Which environment will the parts be used in?
Reliable processes are absolutely vital to ensure that your component won't face any harm. One of these processes is layer thickness measurement, which we carry out in our technical and accredited testing laboratories. Up to three layers on your metallic component are precisely measured with the aim of detecting any defects as early as possible, thus ensuring the quality of the components and their proper functioning.
The most suitable measurement method for assessing layer thickness in components typically depends on the base material and its coating. For instance, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis is ideal for multi-coated metallic components, providing precise measurements of thicknesses and compositions. By exposing the sample to targeted X-rays, electrons are displaced within the atoms, emitting characteristic X-ray fluorescence radiation which experts measure to determine the thickness of up to three layers.
Bossard uses X-ray fluorescence analysis in both accredited and standard testing laboratories. It is a non-destructive method that provides precise, targeted measurements of layer thickness despite the short time it takes.
In our test labs, we therefore test the required protective metal layer thicknesses of the following:
